34th Annual High School Art Competition, Exhibition and Scholarship Awards Program

The Lahaina Arts Association conducts an Annual High School Art Competition, Exhibition and Scholarship Awards Program in November/December of each year.  This program was designed to give graduating high school art students an opportunity to exhibit their artwork and attain partial scholarships to assist with funding their post-secondary art education.

In 2011, LAA awarded $4,000 in scholarships to local young artists.  A Special Artist’s Reception was held in the Old Jail Gallery to award scholarships and honor contest participants.

Tuition Assistance Scholarships Awarded:

Best in Show - $1,000 to Kela Strickland for her watercolor piece “Road to Heaven”

Painting - $500 to Kela Strickland for her watercolor piece “Road to Heaven”

Drawing - $500 to Kristine Felix for her piece “Dedication”

Three-Dimension - $500 to Kai’olu Kaho’ohalahala for her piece “Nene”

Photography - $500 to Rachel Pascual for her piece “Beach Laughs”

Mixed Media - $500 to Marcus Ferreira for his piece “Mano”

This was also our first year of awarding the Gianna M Mitchell Spirit of Aloha Art Scholarship Award.  This $500 scholarship was awarded to Baldwin High School student,  Kela Strickland for her piece “Emotions or Feelings”.  The funds for this scholarship were raised at the Gianna M Mitchell For the Luv of Art event celebrating the life of the beloved Maui artist.

Mahalo to all those who helped make these scholarships possible including our scholarship donors, Lahaina Arts Society, Lynn Shue our guest judge for the competition, and our local High School Art Teachers for encouraging their students to participate.
